ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Davidson's Scott Patrick defeated Gardner-Webb's Hunter Gamble, 6-1, at 184 pounds to capture his second straight Southern Conference Championship Saturday evening. In addition, Patrick will compete in the NCAA Championships for the second time in as many years.
Patrick becomes just the second person in program history to win two straight titles. Henry Westervelt, the only other Davidson wrestler to win multiple titles, won the conference championship in 1957, 1958 and 1959.
As the top seed, Patrick earned a bye into the semifinal round, where he pinned VMI's Derek Thurman just two minutes into the first period to earn a chance to defend his title.
Scoreless after the opening three minutes, Patrick started the second frame on the bottom and easily escaped. With the momentum swinging his way, Patrick registered a takedown to push his lead to 3-0. Gamble tallied an escape, before Patrick recorded another takedown and the riding time point to secure his place in the NCAA Championships.
Six of Davidson's nine wrestlers won at least one bout, with three wrestlers advancing to the third-place match.
At 133 pounds, Elias started strong for the Wildcats with a 4-1 victory of Clarence Arrington of The Citadel. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native jumped out a 2-0 lead thanks to a takedown midway through the second period followed by two escapes to advance to the semifinals.
Against top-seed Nick Soto of Chattanooga, Elias came out fast, scoring a takedown. The fourth-seeded senior maintained control for the remainder of the period, before Soto switched gears and ultimately pinned Elias. In the consolation semifinals, Elias dominated his match, registering a 10-2 major decision over SIUE's Dakota Leach, before taking down Gardner-Webb's Tyler Ziegler, 6-4 to place third in his final conference championship.
James McCord bounced back from a quarterfinal defeat at 149 pounds in his first consolation match. McCord won a hard-fought 6-4 decision over Jack Krall of VMI, before continuing that momentum to earn a trip to the third-place match. In the consolation finals, McCord battled until the end, but was unable to find his rhythm as Chattanooga's Shawn Greevy registered a major decision. McCord ended the day in fourth place.
After falling to Jake Tindle of SIUE, Ian Solcz battled back to advance to the third-place match. Solcz hung tough to score a takedown in the final seconds of the third period to defeat Gardner-Webb's Boyce Cromwell, 4-3. It was the first time in Solcz's career he defeated Cromwell. In the third-place bout, Solcz and Chattanooga's Scottie Boykin were even, but a late Boykin takedown put the match out of reach for the senior.
After dropping his quarterfinal bout to Chattanooga's Austin Sam, Alex Palinski came back to win his first consolation match at 157 pounds in a big way. Palinski posted a major decision over Sam Paulay of VMI, 9-0. Palinski was unable to carry that momentum into the consolation semifinals, as the sophomore fell to Gardner-Webb's Tyler Marinelli.
In the consolation round, Nathaniel Powers earned a 7-3 decision over Jack Duane of The Citadel. Powers scored two takedowns in the third period to secure the win. In the semifinals of the consolations, Powers fought hard, but ultimately fell to SIUE's Jake Residori.
Davidson finished in sixth place with 27.5 team points, edging VMI by three points. Chattanooga claimed its fifth consecutive title with 89 total points.
Patrick will travel to Saint Louis, Mo., to compete at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
