RALEIGH, N.C. – Kevin Birmingham took second place at 149-pounds and Scott Patrick placed fifth at 185-pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team at the 2013 Wolfpack Open, hosted by N.C. State in Raleigh on Sunday afternoon.
Birmingham went 5-1 with three pins on his way to the runner-up finish. After North Carolina's Anderson Pope by a technical fall at 16-1, Birmingham pinned Collin Munson of SoCon foe Campbell in just 50 seconds before earning an 11-7 decision over N.C. State's Cohl Fulk. He moved on to defeat another member of the Wolfpack, Beau Donahue, by fall in 1:53 before pinning ODU's 16th-ranked Alexander Richardson to earn a spot in the finals. He then fell in a 5-1 decision to UNC's Christian Barber to end his run and take second,
Patrick also went 5-1 on the afternoon, working his way back from a quarterfinal loss to take fifth overall at 185-pounds. After earning bye in the first round, he defeated Maryland's Philip Robilotto by a 13-4 major decision before losing by major decision to ODU's Jack Dechow 10-1. Patrick earned 12-4 major decision over UNC Pembroke's Kyle Kidd before taking down Dusty Floyd of Virginia by fall to move to the fifth-place match, where he earned a 3-1 decision over Jared Holliday of Newberry.
Ed Isola went 3-2 at 285-pounds, pinning Virginia Tech's Dawson Peck in 3:09 and earning a 8-0 major decision over Maryland's Sean Twigg. Anthony Elias earned a 17-2 technical fall over Coker's Keyon Benjamin and pinned VMI's Preston Roper on his way to a 2-2 record.
The Wildcats will host Ohio State, George Mason and Anderson in their home opener at Belk Arena next Sunday. The action is slated to start at 1 p.m.
