DAVIDSON, N.C. – Non-conference road games at New Mexico, UW-Milwaukee, Drexel and Richmond, a date with Duke in Charlotte and a matchup with Vanderbilt in the Old Spice Classic highlight the 2012-13 Davidson men's basketball schedule, announced by head coach Bob McKillop today.
“The schedule presents consistent challenges at home and on the road,” said McKillop, who is entering his 24th season at the helm. “It provides outstanding exposure for Davidson College as it gives us an opportunity to compete on the local, regional and national stage.”
All told, six teams advanced to postseason play a year ago, including three that finished with RPIs in the Top-30, according to the NCAA's RPI ratings.
Fans will get their first chance to see the 2012-13 Wildcats in action Saturday, Oct. 20 when Davidson holds its annual Red-Black game at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats will host Belmont Abbey in an exhibition game Nov. 1 before opening the season Nov. 9 against Emory inside the friendly confines of Belk Arena. Three days later, Davidson will begin a stretch of six straight away from home with an 11:59 p.m. (local) tip at New Mexico, as part of ESPN's 24 hours of College Hoops Marathon.
Following their first-ever meeting with UW-Milwaukee (Nov. 17), the Wildcats will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Thanksgiving Holiday to take on Vanderbilt in their first game at the Old Spice Classic Nov. 22-25, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Davidson and the Commodores will play Nov. 22, at 2 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPN2. The Wildcats will face either West Virginia or Marist in their second game of the tournament Nov. 23, at either 12:30 p.m. or 3 p.m.
Other teams in the annual event include UTEP, Oklahoma, Clemson and Gonzaga. ESPN2 will carry seven of the tournament games, including all four first-round games. ESPNU will air three while ESPN and ESPN3 will carry one each.
The Wildcats will conclude their longest regular season road trip since the 1999-2000 season with a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Chattanooga to open the 18-game Southern Conference slate.
Davidson will return home Dec. 5 for the Hornets' Nest Trophy game versus Charlotte before wrapping up its three-game homestand against Wofford (Dec. 8) and in-state foe UNC Wilmington (Dec. 15).
After traveling to Drexel on Dec. 22 for an 8 p.m. contest which will be televised on NBC Sports, the 'Cats will conclude the 2012 calendar year at Richmond on Dec. 29. Davidson defeated the Spiders, 74-61, last season in the two schools first meeting on the hardwood since 1976.
On Jan. 2, Davidson and Duke will continue their long series with a 7 p.m. nationally-televised contest in Time Warner Cable Arena. The 'Cats and Blue Devils last faced each other in Charlotte in 2007, when then seventh-ranked Duke held off Davidson 79-73.
The SoCon slate features two games (home-and-home) against each of the league's Southern Division foes, two games each against North Division opponents Appalachian State and Western Carolina and single contests against Chattanooga (away), Elon (away), Samford (home) and UNCG (home).
The Wildcats will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule by hosting a Bracketbusters game Feb. 23, against an opponent to be named at a later date.
For the second consecutive year, the Southern Conference Tournament will be in Asheville, N.C. It will be held in the Asheville Civic Center March 8-11 with the champion earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Davidson finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 25-8 overall record, marking the fourth time in the last six seasons the Wildcats have posted 25 or more wins. Davidson returns all five starters and the top eight scorers and rebounders from last year's NCAA Tournament squad.
