DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey head coach Ginny Turner has announced the team's scheduled contests for the 2012 season, which is set to open on August 25 vs. William & Mary in an 11 a.m. game at Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats will host a total of 10 games in Davidson, four of which will come against NorPac foes. The squad will also hit the road for nine regular season games and is set to face a mix of nonconference opponents from the ACC, MAC, Ivy League, Big East, CAA and Atlantic-10.
A day after their season-opener against the Tribe the 'Cats, who downed William & Mary in overtime last season for their first win of the series, will host the Hoyas of Georgetown (August 26) in a noon contest. Davidson's win in Washington D.C. last season gave them a 10-4 all-time lead over the Hoyas. The squad is then headed to Kentucky, where they will face Louisville on September 1 at 2 p.m. after falling to the 16th ranked Cardinals for the first time in school history last season. A neutral-site game with Ball State, who the 'Cats have faced just twice before, is scheduled for 1 p.m. the following afternoon in Louisville. Davidson will then continue on the road to Harrisonburg, Va., to play James Madison (1-2-0) on September 9 at 1 p.m.
Returning home soon after, the Wildcats will host both Virginia Commonwealth (Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.), who they will face in the 20th all-time meeting, and Richmond (Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.) before embarking on the 2012 NorPac schedule. They will open conference play on September 23 in a bout with in-state foe Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., at 1 p.m. The 'Cats own the advantage in that series 37-28-2 after sweeping the 2011 series.
Following a midweek contest with North Carolina (Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.) at Belk Turf Field, the 'Cats will continue on with league action at Radford (12-26-2) on September 28 in a 7 p.m. game. They will then return to Davidson for a three-game homestand, kicking things off against Appalachian State for the second time in 2012 on October 2 at 6:30 p.m. The Longwood Lancers arrive in town on October 2 for a Friday evening contest (6 p.m.) and will be followed by the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, who the Wildcats will face on October 9 at 6 p.m. The 'Cats went 1-2 against the Lancers last season, including an overtime loss in the NorPac tournament, and are 16-30-2 vs. the Demon Deacons.
A four-game road swing is up next for the Wildcats, who head to New York for a first-time tilt at Colgate on October 14 at noon. They will remain in the Empire State, taking on Cornell (0-1) in a 4 p.m. match up on October 15, before making their way to Virginia. The Cats will take on Longwood in Farmville, Va., on October 20 at noon before making their way over to Lynchburg to face Liberty at 2 p.m. on October 21 in their final road game of the regular season. A new edition to the NorPac, the Wildcats earned a 3-0 win over the Flames in 2011.
Davidson will wrap up the regular season at home, hosting Radford at 6 p.m. on October 26 before closing things out against Liberty in a 1 p.m. contest on October 28. The Wildcats will then make their way back up to Virginia for the 2012 NorPac Tournament to be hosted by Longwood in Farmville at the beginning of November.
