DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second year in a row, Davidson College will be the destination for the National Lacrosse Tournament, which takes place this weekend, May 4-6, as the Wildcats will open the tournament on Friday afternoon vs. Longwood.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (7-9, 4-3 NLC), which earned the fourth seed, will start its quest for its first NLC Tournament Title on Friday at Richardson Stadium. The Wildcats open against fifth-seeded Longwood (3-12, 3-4 NLC). Gametime is set for 2 p.m. after the first game between top-seed High Point and eighth-seed Howard at 11:30 a.m.
Should the Wildcats advance, they would face the winner of the Panthers-Bison game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the semifinals. If the 'Cats fall, they would then play the loser of that same matchup, with gametime set for 9 a.m.
All tournament coverage can be followed at the NLC website.
National Lacrosse Conference Tournament
This is Davidson's third year in the NLC. Last year saw the Wildcats reach the semifinals with a win over Liberty (11-6), before falling to top-seed Jacksonville, 19-7, to end their season.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Friday's contest vs. Longwood will be the 13th meeting, with the Lancers holding a 7-6 advantage. Davidson snapped a four-game skid in the all-time series earlier this year with an 18-14 win at home. It gave head coach Kim Wayne her first win against Longwood.
In that meeting, Alanna Parker found the back of the net a season-high five times and leading scorer Ann Fucigna had her 12th multi-goal game with four scores in the four-goal win.
Parker, who pushed her goal total to 20 on the season, scored four of her career-high tying five goals in the second half, including three in the final seven minutes of the game to help hold off a charging Lancer squad. Longwood had cut a four-goal lead (15-11) down to two after back-to-back scores from Jamie Brentlinger in a 30-second snap and around eight minutes left in the game.
Parker went back-to-back herself at the 6:45 and 5:44 marks to give Davidson (6-8, 3-2 NLC) a cushion of 17-13, before she closed out the scoring with 22 seconds left on the clock. One of the three goals came off a great caused turnover by the junior captain in the Longwood zone, allowing her to go one-on-one with the goalie in open space and she converted on the attempt.
Last Time Out...
... High Point's Alexis Goldman scored two of her game-high five goals in the second half and the Panthers broke open a close contest by outscoring Davidson 6-1 in the second stanza to take a 12-5 decision in both team's regular-season finale last Saturday evening.
Davidson saw its three-game win streak come to an end as it fell to 7-9, 4-3 in NLC action. Alanna Parker led the way for the 'Cats with a pair of goals, while Ann Fucigna, Erin Doherty and Mary Leonard each scored single goals.
Fucigna pushed her points total on the season to 62 by adding two assists to go along with her goal. The sophomore is now just three points away from breaking the single-season points mark of 64 set by Jen Crawford in 2010. She is also six goals away from tying her single-season record in goals set last year as a freshman.
Davidson found itself down 5-0 in the first 23 minutes of the game as the Panthers controlled possession throughout half. Goldman scored three of the five goals for HPU.
Fucigna got the Wildcats offense rolling with her 43rd goal of the season at the 4:48 mark. It sparked a 4-1 run that allowed Davidson to trail by just two, 6-4, going into the break. With 1:46 on the clock, Parker got a feed from Doherty for the second goal, and then less than 20 seconds later, Doherty converted on her 25th goal of the year off a pass from Fucigna to make it 5-3.
Leonard closed out the flurry of Wildcat goals to close the half with her 13th score and just 34 ticks left in the half. She countered High Point's goal at the 42 second mark.
But, the second half was all High Point as the Panthers opened the new stanza by scoring six unanswered goals, while holding Davidson scoreless until the 4:53 mark for the final of 12-5. The 'Cats got off only six shots for the half.
Diane Girling, Rebecca Garman and Erin McGuire each caused two turnovers apiece on defense. Girling had a team-best four groundballs to push her total to a team-high 36 on the year. Doherty push her single-season record in draw controls to 58 with a pair.
Junior Jessica Melby stopped nine shots to give her a personal-best 134 saves on the season. She also had a season-best three groundballs and caused a turnover.
