W. Soccer Continues Homestand, Hosts Providence and Florida Gulf Coast For First Time

DAVIDSON, N.C. — After an impressive opening weekend for the Davidson women's soccer team, they will look to keep the winning going with a pair of contests this Friday night and Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The Matchup
Davidson will welcome for the first time to Alumni Stadium the Providence Friars on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The All-Time Series
This is the first time that each team has faced each other. Davidson was scheduled to play Providence in 2008 on the road, but the game was canceled due weather.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (1-0) got off to roaring start with an impressive 8-1 season-opening win vs. UNC Asheville last Saturday ... it was the most goals scored in a game for Davidson since a 12-0 blanking of The Citadel in 2004 ... freshman Julia Singley and sophomore Lauren Mihan led the charge offensively with two goals each ... Singley's first collegiate goal proved to be the game-winner ... she was named the season's first SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday ... it's the first player of the week for Davidson since Kyrie Bye-Nagel earned her second of the season in 2008 ... Mihan's two goals were the firsts of her career ... first-year players Becca Fisher, Rachel Stelter and Stephanie Piperno also scored their first collegiate goals in their collegiate debuts ... goalkeeper Jessie Baxa played 45 minutes of shutout ball between the pipes ... Davidson had 34 shots with 20 of them on goal ... the 'Cats improved to 15-8 all-time in home-openers ... the 'Cats' welcome back eight starters and 17 letterwinners total from last year ... Davison was picked to finish seventh in the SoCon preseason poll.
Scouting the Friars
Providence (0-0-1) earned a 2-2 tie against Bryant to open the year ... Taylor Bartini and Laura DiClemente brought the Friars back from a 2-0 deficit with a goal apiece ... overtime saw only three shots taken ... Providence had its first winning season since 1993 a year ago with a 9-7-2 record ... the Friars were 3-6-2 in the Big East ... they were picked to finish fifth in the American Division of the Big East ... they bring back 14 letterwinners, six of which were starters ... Providence also plays Charlotte on its trip to North Carolina this weekend ... Amanda Webster returns as the leading scorer from last season when she had seven goals for 14 points ... goalkeeper Caitlin Walker returns between the pipes after going 5-4-1 with 36 saves last year.
Scouting the Eagles
FGCU (1-1) splits its two games against Eastern Washington (W, 4-1) and Syracuse (L, 0-1) at the Embassy Suites Kick-off Classic ... Melissa Arnold led the offense last weekend with a goal and assist ... the Eagles game against the Syracuse was a physical one with six cards being issued ... the Eagles are coming off an 11-4-2 campaign a year ago and were 8-0-2 in the Atlantic Sun ... 14 letterwinners return from that team with seven being starters ... FGCU was picked first in the A-Sun ... its been five years since the Eagles moved from DII up to the DI level and are postseason eligible this year for the first time ... head coach Jim Blankenship has led the Eagles to four straight double-digit win seasons and is 43-20-8 during his time there.
