BlackOut Belk Arena Set for Feb. 7 Against College of Charleston

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The third annual BlackOut Belk Arena will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, when the Davidson men's basketball team hosts Southern Conference rival College of Charleston at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
The concept behind BlackOut Belk is to flood Belk Arena with black T-shirts, showing a unified home crowd, and also Davidson's commitment to the community as proceeds from the event are donated to a local charity. This year's charity is HAMMERS, an alliance between the Davidson Housing Coalition and Davidson College that was started in 2003.
BlackOut Belk t-shirts can be purchased for $15 Monday, Feb. 2, at the men's basketball game against Western Carolina (game time is 7 p.m.). T-shirts can also be purchased at the Baker Sports Complex front desk from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 6, while supplies last. Shirts can be purchased via cash, check, Cat Card and credit card.
The BlackOut Belk tradition was started during the 2006-07 season with the Wildcats' game against Charlotte, a 79-51 Davidson victory. Part of the money raised at the event was donated to the Wildcat House, a Habitat for Humanity project, sponsored by Davidson.
The second BlackOut Belk event was last February, when the Wildcats hosted College of Charleston. At the time, the attendance of 5,753 was the highest for a Southern Conference game at Belk Arena, and part of the proceeds went to the Ada Jenkins Center, a community center devoted to improving the quality of life for residents of North Mecklenburg “through the delivery of health, education, and human services.”
This year, a donation will be made to HAMMERS, an organization created to “reduce the immediate threats to life, health, and safety in homes owned and occupied by lower wealth residents of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Mooresville.” Since its first project in 2005, HAMMERS has successfully completed repairs on more than 80 homes in the North Mecklenburg area.
BlackOut Belk is the tipoff in a series of charitable events involving Davidson basketball this February. Also scheduled are the Pink Zone event for women's basketball (Feb. 14, 2 p.m.), which will benefit the Kay Yow Foundation and the White Out (BracketBusters game Feb. 20 or 21), which will benefit Kicks from 'Cats – the Andrew Lovedale Shoe Drive.
BlackOut Belk is made possible thanks to our generous sponsors: Jim Fuller and Sandy Carnegie of the McIntosh Law Firm, Ashton Loyd of the Griffin Agency, Artisan Signs and Graphics, Jan Pak, Corporate Benefit Advisors, Knox Realty, Davidson College Archives, and Davidson Screen Printing.
